1. Exercise Warm-Up (Gymnastic)
All the children stand up and participate in a 10-minute exercise warm-up to high-energy music where they follow the leader. This includes exercises inspired from different parts of the world, including yoga, African and Tai Chi calisthenics as well as sit-ups, push-ups, and jumping jacks. This warm-up energizes and "wakes up" the children's physical awareness, improves co-ordination, teaches them the importance of discipline and physical conditioning in art and life.
2. Multicultural Dance
Next will be a 20-minute multicultural dance inspired from 9 cultures, including African, Indian, South American, Chinese Dragon, First Nations, Ukranian, Iranian, Israeli, and Arabic. Half way through the dance, the instructor will invite individual children to dance with her. This dance validates children from different ethnic backgrounds by reflecting a familiar culture, educates the children about culture, and inspires them to dance.
3. Drama, Acting (Happy, Sad, Angry) Dance
Segments of multicultural music are used to validate the basic emotions. The children are encouraged to move and express themselves through dance, and begin to learn the value of dance and movement as an expressive outlet. Through dance, the teacher guides them in a 15-minute sequence.
4. Multicultural Dance Storying
This includes any one of 15 musical dance stories that the teacher has created ranging in length from 10 minute to 45 minutes. The teacher narrates and dances these stories simultaneously with the children, involving them from beginning to end. The children, by participating in the story as a group, begin to develop a personal sense of style and expression while at the same time working as a cohesive whole with others. Without their realizing it, their attention span is lengthened by being absorbed in a story. Through a range of movement, their physical stamina is improved. |
